Goal setting and creating a game plans— I’m trying something new.

New year. New goals. That’s everyone’s motto, right? It’s definitely something that has become my motto and something I think is so important — especially now more than ever. Not only is it important to set goals, but it’s also important to create a game plan for achieving those goals.

In this post we’ll discuss goal setting, game planning, and the one tool you can use to do both.

Goal setting is something new for me and something I’ve started to take very seriously this year. At the end of the year I began looking to the best way to set goals that are specific and attainable. I tried goal setting in the past, but always had trouble and would end up never doing anything.

But 2021 is the year of change and a new me, right? It is. It is! So after some Googling on how to set goals, I came across SMART goals (which I had come across before, but never really did anything with).

Specific
Measurable
Attainable
Realistic
Time-bound

SMART goals are the goals I didn’t know I needed. They’ve helped me to create a list of goals that are intentional, ones that I really believe I can achieve this year (all fingers and toes crossed). In addition to my goal list, I’ve also created game plans, or blueprints, of how I plan to achieve them.

What tool I use to set goals and keep track of them

This is why I love technology and innovation. There are so many tools and resources available that help enrich our everyday lives. My number one tool of 2021 (so far) is Notion.

Notion has been my ultimate life and project planner and I began using it last year, but I never used it like this. I created a 2021 goals page (it’s very simple, but oh so useful to me) in the form of a kanban board (like Trello). I then created categories corresponding to the different goals I’d like to work on over the course of this new year (life, web development, podcast, etc).

Within each category I created a specific goal (which is its own page) and within each goal page, I created the game plan outlining how and what I will do to reach that goal. These game plans are detailed and specific, because I need structure. I created tables and lists with deadlines for the different items/activities that will help me achieve my goals. Because I know that life will happen and throw a curve ball when I least expect it, all of the deadlines are flexible.

I designed the goals page in hopes of starting to do an end of year review. Another new habit I’d like to start! Check out this YouTube video (by one of my favorite YT’ers) here for the goal setting inspiration. Creating these pages was so fun, interestingly very relaxing, and me realize one thing...

I. Love. Notion.

Goal setting, let alone game planning, are two things I never used to do or wanted to do. I think it was because I was always nervous of not accomplishing what I wanted to over the course of a year. However, I decided that it was time to make a change, and stop feeling that way.

Honestly, this year feels different. A good, exciting, different.

Here’s to a successful and goal accomplishing year!
